Onam is a very popular harvest festival in the state of
Kerala, India. It is mainly originated from the Malayalees tradition and
connects with their folktales. This harvest festival falls in the month of
Chingam (between August & September) as per their calendar that get
celebrated for 10 days. Although it is festival of Malayalees culture, but like
any other festival of India, people of all faiths and castes celebrate this
festival with same enthusiasm.
This festival is being celebrated from the Sangam age in the
Malayalees custom. In that period, the entire month of Chingam was celebrated
as Onam. It is also termed as a festival to welcome the spring season that
indicates the harvest season. It also includes visiting of various temples,
exchange of gifts in the form of cloths with friends and family known as
Onakkodi and family get-together.
Onam is also considered as an auspicious period to buy
Spatik Shriyantra that helps in establishing good fortune in the form of peace
and happiness at home and in the family members. In ancient culture, it was
used to enhance wealth by the business class people as it is considered as dear
idol by the Goddess Lakshmi. It is pyramid that indulges white light and
reflects rainbows from it. It is believed that more pointed pyramid means more
power.
