Importance Of Tulsi In Hindu Religion

All the things of Tulsi plant, flowers, leaves, twigs, fruits, skin and roots and also soil surrounded the plant is divine. It is common ritual that people place Tulsi leaves on dead body to make permanent place in Visnuloka. People believe that Tulsi placed on dead body removes all the sins of dead person. At the time of death if one thinks of God and mumbles his name and burn the dead body with Tulsi twings then dead person would not have rebirth. Even the person who has done many sins would get moksha if at the cremating time Tulsi leave is placed at the bottom of funeral fire. Just like water become wholesome pure by merger with Ganga water, all firewood is made clean by addition of tiny piece of Tulsi leave.

In case using Tulsi leaves along fires dead body of person, one’s sins for many kalpa years would be removed. It is believed that if dead body is fired along with Tulsi leaves then even Yamadutas cannot come close to body, Vishnu protects the body through his servants. In case light is burnt for Vishnu along with Tulsi stick then it would be equivalent to burning lot many lights for Vishnu. In case one makes Tulsi leaves in paste and slurs it one’s body and then praises Vishnu for 1 day, one will be getting the advantage of 100 usual worships and also advantages of doing 100 go-danas. 

Tulsi Mala – The Sacred And Ritual Rosary

Majority of Hindu people grow Tulsi plant at their homes that is symbolic of good health, sacredness, and purity. Few households also have more than dozens of Tulsi plants in their garden. Along with this, people also create small forests that are known as ‘Tulsi-Vrindavans.’

Tulsi leaves garland is also the 1^st offering as daily ritual’s part in Hinduism that is called as ‘Tulsi Naivedhya. There is belief that without Tulsi, the offering or puja is not complete.

For almost 5 days the festival continues and ends on full moon day. In the celebration of this festival, couple without daughter acts as a bride’s parents perform this ceremony at a temple. Tulsi Vivah is a ceremonial marriage of divine Tulsi plant to Hindu Vishnu god or one of his avatars, Krishna. Tulsi Vivah is practiced on Shukla Paksha's Ekadashi in Kartik month as per Hindu calendar. Tulsi vivah signifies the end of monsoon and start of Hindu marriage season. 

In Hindu religion, Tulsi is considered as a deity. Tulsi is known as an embodiment of Shri Mahalakshmi, and Tulsi had tied the knot to demon King Jalandhar. Because of her love and devotion towards Lord Vishnu, King Jalandhar became invincible. Even powerful Lord Shiva could not get victory on Jalandhar and requested Lord Vishnu to search for solution on this issue. Lord Vishnu converted himself as Jalandhar and violated Vrinda. Tulsi's chastity ruined and then Lord Shiva destroyed King Jalandhar. Because of this Vrinda got highly frustrated and cursed Vishnu to become completely black and he would be distinguished from his life partner. Then Vrinda burnt herself on her husband's funeral because of shame. The Vishnu or gods shifted her soul to plant and gave Tulsi name and blessed her that in next birth he shall wed Vrinda. Though on Kartik Ekadashi, Tulsi plant marriages with Lord Vishnu in the form of Shaligram.
