Mahashivratri is a festival celebrated in the honor of Lord Shiva "The great night of Lord Shiva". It is considered as one of the most significant sacred festival of India. The festival falls on the 13th night (waning moon) and 14th day of the month Phalguna (Magha). This year celebrate Mahashivratri on 13th February, Tuesday.

Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the ′Tandava′. It is also believed that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati Ma.

The planetary positions on Mahashivratri is the most powerful. By practicing meditation and yoga on this day, religious penances are carried out to gain boons.  Hence, this day is a great and unique opportunity to make use of the natural forces for our wellbeing.

THE HISTORY OF MAHASHIVRATRI:

According to ancient legends, Mahashivratri marks the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is also believed that on the night of Mahashivratri, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava dance. On this day, Lord Shiva saved the world from a pot of poison that emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan, by drinking it.

MAHASHIVRATRI CELEBRATIONS:

On this day, devotees remember Lord Shiva, chant prayers ("Om Namah Shivaya"), fast, do Shiva yoga, visit temples and some even keep awake all night (jaagaran).

Also by chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is considered powerful and one can seek the blessings of Lord Shiva on this day. The mantra is -

Why Do Tulsi Mala Contains 108 Beads?

Tulsi is considered as the most auspicious plant in Hindu tradition. The mala made up of tulsi stem has been used since ages. The Tulsi Mala is consists of 108 beads. The number 108 is considered as the most scared number and has its own significance. As per the astrology, the zodiac sign is divided into 12 signs and located at a distance of 30 degree from each other. The sun is the signification of the 1st as well as 9th house. Hence when we divide each zodiac sign into nine it give rise to 9 divisional charts. That means each sign of 12 zodiac signs consist of 9 divisions that results into 108 divisions. Similarly, the moon consists of 108 tone and 108 padas as per the lunar zodiac signs. 

All these divisions, padas and tones help sin establishing peace and happiness in our life. It’s a step that helps us to connect with the Divine power to obtain the metal peace and happiness. Why Chanting Malas Should Have 108 Beads?

Hindu mala or rosary generally entails around 108 beads including the merubead. In few sects but the numbers of beads the quantity of beads differs, for example in Shaiva sect the mala has thirty-two beads. As per few holy texts the mala must have just nine beads and one must count 108 with twelve of its turns. The alphabet mala is made of Rudraksha beads. It is made of fifty-one alphabets of Devanagari script like ‘a’ to ‘ksh’. In this ‘a’ to ‘l’ are measured on the usual beads and ‘ksh’ on merubead. While chanting by this, 1^st you start in natural order by ‘a’ to ‘l’ and then after from ‘/’ to ‘a’.

Why chanting of mala should have 108 beads?

Anger, attachment, greed, desire, envy, and pride are the 6 enemies or defects of the soul. Frequently more than one defect is dominant at one time. Rarely even 2 defects can be leading. Hence one originates 6 variations of defect, for example desire-anger, instance desire, desire-envy, desire-pride, desire-attachment, and desire-greed etc. hence by the 6 defects, 36 variations are gained. These 36 permutations have either raja, or tama, or sattva as their main component, for example desire-anger-raja, desire-anger-sattva, and desire-anger-tama. Hence, 36x3=108 variations are gained. Each bead in the mala is a representative of such kind of permutation. The merubead manages its separate existence despite of being with rest. Hence lastly the mala entails 109 beads.
