Hessonite – Technical information

This is calcium aluminum mineral. It is red but closer to orange tinge. Its specific gravity is between 3.64 and 3.69 and hardness around 7 on Mohs scale and double refractive index, vitreous luster.

The stone is commonly found in Sri Lanka and India; also found in California to a lesser extent. Engraved gemstone (zircon-sp: 4.6) can be detected from hessonite by its specific gravity.

The gem is known as ‘gomedhaka’ in India it represents the planet Rahu. It is believed to have the color of cow urine or more like honey. Only blue, green, and white colorless hessonite is associated with Rahu.
