Margashirsha Laxmi Puja – Importance And Process


Margashirsha Lakshmi Puja is followed on Thursday in Margashirsha month (November – December). This puja is devoted to Laxmi Goddess, the Hindu Goddess of prosperity and fortune. Starting fast from sunrise to sunset on Thursday in Margashirsh month is known as extremely meritorious. Here is an easy explanation on how to do Margashirsha Laxmi Puja.

Both women and men observe Mahalakshmi Puja and fasting. Married couples follow it together. The very essential element of this day is cleanliness. Premises and home must be kept clean and neat. The fast starts after taking morning bath. Prayers are served to Lakshmi and Ganesha in the morning hours after having bath. Fasting begins from sunrise to sunset. On this day, person who is following vrat can eat banana, milk, and fruits. People who are doing this Margashirsha Lakshmi Puja invite 7 married and 7 young girls on this fasting day and offer them haldi kumkum, fruits, and Mahalakshmi Vrat katha book.

Women and men do fasting and Lakshmi puja. Married women perform this puja with their husbands. It is observed in the evening. Devotees read Mahalakshmi Vrat and Mahalakshmi Mahatmya. Mahalakshmi Naman Ashtak and Sri Mahalakshmi Arti are chanted on this day. In the evening, after performing Mahalakshmi Vrat vegetarian food should be consumed, this usually served to Goddess.
